Belted Tires
Belted tires tend to work better on the trail when under a heavy vehicle. It is also important that it has the appropriate tread to work well. The body plies of belted-bias tires criss-cross diagonally, like those of bias-ply tires, to ensure strong sidewalls. The added belts are two or more cord strips that are cut on the bias and alternated, in herringbone fashion, around the perimeter of the tire between the body plies and the tread. Belts not only strengthen the tire against impact and puncture damage, but also serve to stiffen the tread so that it has fewer tendencies to squirm on the road.
Most belted tires are built with a circumferential fiberglass or steel belt, just like a radial. This helps the belted tires get a little of the on-highway qualities of a radial, and it makes them very cut-resistant. It generally takes a heavy vehicle to make a bias-belted tire work well on the trail since the tread area can be quite stiff, at least with a steel belt.
